Tanzania Bird Watching

Tanzania is a magnificent place for birdwatching, with 1,140 species and 74 species of aquatic birds. For migrants and residents in breeding plumage, Tanzanian avian safaris are best during the rainy season. Arusha National Park, with 400 birds in a variety of ecosystems found in a restricted space, is a premier birding destination. You may see a white-faced whistling duck or a dusky flycatcher, all of which have a whistling three-note lament. Over Ngurdoto Crater, tawny eagles and buzzards soar, while the Momella Lakes are home to aquatic birds and waders. Pink flamingos, pelicans, storks, cormorants, hornbills, and other birds can be found in Lake Manyara National Park, which has over 400 species. In the Ngorongoro Crater, millions of greater and lesser flamingos congregate on their breeding grounds at Lake Natron.

On the drier plains, where weavers and lovebirds are also abundant, Tarangire’s swamps are home to over 550 animals, including hefty kori bustards, ostriches, secretary birds, and helmeted guinea fowls. The endangered Fischer’s lovebird, a bright-hued small parrot often present in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the grey crowned crane, and the brown snake eagle can all be seen on a Serengeti 500 birding species safari. Buff-crested bustards and spike-heeled larks breed on the plains under Mount Kilimanjaro, which is also home to Abbot’s starlings with white bellies and purple capes, alpine hill chats, and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds, as well as lammergeyer. The distributions of both southern and eastern birds converge on a bird watching trip to the southern parks with Biko Adventure Tours. The Rufiji and Great Ruaha Rivers provide ideal habitat for mangrove kingfishers, yellow-billed storks, malachite kingfishers, African skimmers, and palm-nut vultures, with over 440 reported listings for the large Selous Game Reserve.

Ruaha National Park is home to 570 species of birds, including the yellow-collared sunbird, giant kingfisher, and ashy starling. During the rainy season, Katavi draws a good number of waterfowl. The great frigatebird, African paradise flycatcher, woodland batis, buff-spotted flufftail, and spectacular Fischer’s turaco with iridescent blue cap and wings are among the 268 species protected on Zanzibar. Many migratory waders can be included among the 400 species of birds found in Saadani’s river inlets and mangroves. With 30 short-range endemic plants, the Eastern Arc Mountains are important.

The blue swallow and Denham’s bustard can be found in Kitulo Plateau National Park, while Friedmann’s lark and Shelley’s starling can be found in Mkomazi Game Reserve. Udzungwa partridge, olive-flanked robin-chat, white-chested alethe, and Sharpe’s akalat are all covered in the Udzungwa mountain woods. Loveridge’s sunbird and Uluguru bush-shrike can be found in the Uluguru Mountains. Although the Usambara Mountains are not well-studied, forest birding tours can reveal globally endangered Usambara eagles, Sokoke and scops owls, long-billed tailor birds, and Usambara weavers, while the Lindi coastal forests are home to Livingstone’s flycatcher and southern banded snake eagles. Biko Adventure Tours will plan a Tanzanian avian holiday for you that includes visits to the most possible feathered habitats, as well as a professional spotter and guide to help you add more awesome checkmarks, birding photographs, and videos to your visual checklist.
